2011 Golden Carrot Award Winner: LAUSD
LAUSD, the nation's second largest school district, serves healthy lunch options daily to more than 650,000 students. Throughout our schools, students are eating healthier, low-fat lunches with more fresh fruits and vegetables purchased from local farmers. Nutritious vegetable bean burgers, avocado wraps, vegetable tamales and salads are becoming increasingly popular choices. Gone are corn dogs, chicken nuggets, chocolate milk and soda. In recognition of these creative and beneficial changes, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a national nonprofit organization that promotes healthy diets, recently named LAUSD the grand prize winner of the 2011 Golden Carrot Award.
Breakfast in the Classroom
Broadway is now participating in an innovative new program called . Just as the name implies, breakfast is served to each student right in the classroom. All students have an opportunity during the first 10 minutes of class to eat breakfast with their classmates and obtain the fuel needed to get through the morning ready to learn. Breakfast is provided at NO CHARGE and participation is strictly voluntary. To opt out of the breakfast program, parents simply notify their child's teacher.
