API measures the academic performance and progress of public schools in California with the state setting 800 as the score that schools should strive to meet. Broadway increased its score by 107 points, from 748 to 855.

“Congratulations to the teachers, students and the whole school community at Broadway Elementary School for their wonderful achievement,” Los Angeles School Board Member Steve Zimmer said. “These students have done consistently well on tests, and they have demonstrated a strong academic performance, but it takes hard work and dedication to beat your personal best. They make us all proud.”

The principal of Broadway Elementary School, which recently launched its English-Mandarin Chinese dual-language immersion program, credits the 107-point increase to teamwork and intervention—methods of helping struggling students make the grade.

“We really based our instruction on data and response to intervention, which brought on results,” said Broadway Elementary School principal Susan Wang. “We looked at the data and provided differentiated instruction to focus around the students’ needs.”

Wang added, “I’m very proud of our kids, staff, parents and the whole community. This is the result of teamwork. We were focused and it worked!”
