Chinese New Year 2015

Chinese New Year 2015

Chinese New Year, the Year of the Ram, began February 19. This is a highlight of the Mandarin Dual Immersion Program school year. In addition to the many classroom activities, we held the Chinese New Year Festival Saturday, 2/21 on the Broadway campus. Broadway families enjoyed not only the UCLA Lion Dance Troupe but grade level performances as well. There were game booths, a photo booth, face painting and crafts in addition to 3 bouncy castles. There were food booths and food trucks, too. It was a wonderful time for all our families!

Chinese Mid Autumn Festival Celebrated Monday, September 8, 2014

This year, the Mid-Autumn Festival falls on Monday, September 8, 2014.  The moon is the focus of the harvest Festival and is at its brightest and fullest at this time.  Mooncakes are both given and received as gifts and are eaten as the traditional food to observe this holiday.

M.I. KINDER CORNER

Curricular Topics for This Week

Here are the curricular topics for this week: we will continue the final Language Arts Unit, “I Know A Lot.” We will be using all the language skills the students have acquired during our year together. For phonics, we will review /y/ and /z/.  Our high frequency words are “they and me.” In Math, we continue the preparation for next year with “Step Up to First Grade” by looking at subtraction. The Mandarin teachers have 4 characters of Chinese character review: 這 (this) 是 (is) 朋友 (friend) (Review)

Kids Corner - Activities Around L.A. for families

Modes of Transportation Around LA. Here are a few fun places to visit in L.A. on the weekends: Travel Town in Griffith Park has lots of trains to see, and even climb on!   A trip to Union Station downtown to see the modern trains and train yard would be fun. From there, you can hop a subway and take a ride to Hollywood or even Culver City . Also downtown is the historic Angel’s Flight cable car “The shortest railway in the world” connecting 351 South Hill Street to 350 South Grand Avenue.  For cars, try the Peterson Automotive Museum on Wilshire across from LACMA, . To see cargo ships in the harbor, it is amazing to watch the giant cranes in San Pedro as off-load their cargo (). Don’t forget our own Marina del Rey and the sailboats, daily early morning crew team workouts and the various fishing crafts. Lots to learn about Transportation all around us!

Workshops for Kids every Saturday at Lowe's and Home Depot stores From project basics to giving your child the opportunity to say, "I built it!", our Build and Grow kid's clinics are a great way to help build confidence! Bring the kids into any Lowe's or Home Depot store and build a FREE wooden project. Each participant also receives a free apron, goggles, a project themed patch, and a certification of merit upon completion of their project. Call your local store for times and dates.
