Based on your expertise, time availability, and interest, there are many committees that can use your help:

School-Wide Committees

“Friends of Broadway”

Friends of Broadway is a parent-run, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that raises money to support Broadway Elementary School instruction and student activities. All parents/guardians of Broadway students are members of Friends of Broadway.

Curbside Valet Drop-Off

This is a parent-run committee that oversees the valet system, which alleviates congestion and parking issues during student drop-off. For more information, visit the Curbside Valet Drop-Off page HERE.

School Site Council (SSC)

The SSC, governed under LAUSD guidelines, is the decision-making council for the school’s categorical budget to improve student achievement. The SSC develops and approves the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) in consultation with all stakeholders.

English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC)

The ELAC, governed under LAUSD guidelines, must advise and make recommendations to the School Site Council on the following four (4) legally required topics:

  1. Advise the SSC on the development of the SPSA, especially those sections related to English learners
  2. Assist in the development of the school’s needs assessment
  3. Assist in the development of the school’s language census
  4. Assist in the development of the school’s efforts to make parents aware of the importance of regular school attendance

Compensatory Education Advisory Committee (CEAC)

The CEAC, governed under LAUSD guidelines, assists in program evaluation and review of student achievement data to develop and make written recommendations to the SSC. The CEAC develops advisory recommendations to the School Site Council on the annual update/review of the School-Parent Compact and the Title I Parent Involvement Policy.

Mandarin Immersion (MI) Committees

Academic Support Committee

The Academic Support Committee consults with the MI Teachers to: 1) provide tutoring and homework help that reinforces grade-level standards, 2) assist parents in better understanding Mandarin and English standards, 3) help create new teaching/learning materials throughout the year, and 4) provide organized parent feedback to Principal Wang and the teachers with regard to the interpretation and development of Mandarin standards.

Parent Information Committee

The Parent Information Committee consolidates important dates, activities, and news and disseminates this information to the MI parent community through a weekly e-newsletter. This group also maintains a Master Calendar of Events and the MI Parent Directory and connects families interested in forming carpools.

Parent Outreach Committee

The Parent Outreach Committee organizes program-wide social events to foster a strong and connected community. Activities include: the Volunteer Fair, monthly Coffee Talks, parent workshops, and weekend picnics.

Recruitment Committee

The Recruitment Committee targets and implements recruitment efforts, organizes and coordinates school tours, represents the program at educational fairs, and generates an electronic press kit and publicity video for the program.

Growth & Management Committee

The Growth & Management Committee oversees the long-term growth of the program K–8 while tracking and addressing the immediate needs of the MI community. Members of this group represent the entire parent body whenever interfacing with the District for any and all programmatic needs.

Room Parents

The Room Parents assist teachers with supporting classroom- and cohort-specific issues, such as: disseminating class information, coordinating volunteers, and scheduling parent-teacher conferences. Room parents also work within and across cohorts to organize cultural and special events throughout the school year.

MI Parent Council

The MI Parent Council is comprised of two leaders from each of the six Parent Volunteer Committees. The Parent Council meets with Principal Wang on a monthly basis to facilitate communication between committees as well as the faculty and to ensure that all support efforts are coordinated.
